Weekly Game Jam 58: Card Shark in the Casino post mortem
With the 58th week of the Weekly Game Jam over I worked with a team to develop the idea for this game.
I had never worked in a group before and I found that Unity's built in collab system to be very useful and helpful in sharing the project files. I had fun working with a team too. It was weird though, my normal work flow is to make the mechanics, then add art, work out some more game play and level design, then add sounds. Having a team on this I would take breaks and wait for some art but right to coding, which made me feel a bit burnt out a bit quicker. I also thought that I would have more free time but that thought left me with a shortened level. There was plans for more platforming and collecting a full 52 card deck but due to the deadline I have released this version with only 12 cards and less platforming than originally intended. It was my first time using a full sprite sheet to animate the characters and I was able to learn how to use sprite sheets and the animator component a lot better because of it. Due to my lack of knowledge there are some graphical errors that I, the programmer, will take blame for as the artists sprite sheets were very well done. There was also plans for audio triggers that alert the guards but I have not done much with ai before and due to time I cut out the more complex interactions.
I loved how this game turned out in the end. The art and the music fit together nicely and even though I had to cut some features to get this game done in a week I think it turned out well and gives a good idea of where I would like to take this game in the future. Even though this is a post mortem for the project, I am writing it from the completion date of the jam. With the amount of stuff that was planned for I feel that this is a project worth continuing on in the future. I have quite a few ideas I can add into it which will make it a more complete game.
